The brief. Black Quay was appointed lead technical adviser to an international consortium bidding for a share of the four GCT terminals in New York and Vancouver.

The challenge. Four terminals spread across two countries and two coasts, two regulatory environments and two entirely different trade catchments.

The terminals also sat on restricted footprints, so the growth case could not rest on expansion. It had to include densification strategies, which put the automation analysis at the centre of the valuation.

What we did. We delivered full multi-terminal operational capacity and productivity analysis across all four facilities, with opex and capex cost calculation and fleet forecasting on both coasts.

Development optioneering examined how capacity could be raised over time on constrained footprints, including semi-automated and fully automated berth, yard, rail and gate solutions.

The scope also covered asset condition reviews, environmental management planning, trade scenario analysis, and review of both senior management and operational management processes.

The outcome. Our work left the client with a highly detailed technical appraisal of all four terminals and of the work required to futureproof them into the medium term.
